Beating the Bounds

The Bounds walk takes place once a year on May bank holiday and follows the route shown on the map (click map for large view)

At 8.00 am on the first Monday in May, a determined group gathers at the Cross on the Green. In the 1990s there were usually over 100 people representing a wide cross-section of the village plus a scattering of visitors.

At the stroke of the Church clock and to the sound of the horn, the group commence a walk of some eighteen miles 'beating the bounds' of the parish of Aldbourne.

Dr Trevor Tiplady and Commander Davies restarted this tradition in the 1960's and for many years Don Barnes led the walk. Permission is obtained from local landowners to traverse the sections of the route which do not lie on rights of way.

There is a lunch stop beyond Woodsend. The group usually meets those beating the bounds of Ramsbury Parish near Loves Lane and the journey ends on the Green at around 5.00pm. Those participants successfully completing the walk are given a ribbon - a much prized possession.
